Two shoes that look similar can have very different care requirements. The manufacturer’s label is the final authority.

Shoes that may be suitable

Many athletic, running, tennis, children’s and canvas shoes may be machine washable when their care labels allow it.

  • Check glued areas and decorative parts.
  • Confirm that the material can tolerate water and detergent.
  • Use one shoe per washing bag when separating a pair.

Shoes to keep out of the washer

Leather, suede, loose ornaments and delicate trim are not recommended. Never override a label that says not to machine wash.

A washing bag has limits

A bag can contain and cushion a shoe, but it cannot guarantee protection from every form of damage or make an unsuitable material washable.
